When bacterial cells are exposed to a sanitizers or disinfectant, various physical structures within the cell may sustain irreversible damage. The permanent loss of a bacterial cell’s capability to reproduce is commonly referred to microbial death. In the presence of germicides, some bacteria, may only be partially damaged. A surface which is swabbed immediately after sanitization can often provide false or negative results, indicating that effective sanitization had occurred. However, depending on the degree, partially inactivated bacteria have the capacity to “heal” or regenerate within 18 to 24 hours and become viable. Such an “apparently” clean and bacteria free surface will show the presence of high levels of bacterial contamination the following day and if left unchecked, can contaminate food products which may come into contact with the surface during the normal course of food processing.
The effectiveness of a specific germicide is a function of several factors, including the number and type of microorganisms which are present on the surface being sanitized.
Some of the factors requiring consideration are whether they are the easy to kill bacteria in their vegetative state or whether they are present on the surface as highly resistant spores. A major consideration that also needs to be addressed is whether other materials such as blood, feces or organic matter are are present within the bacterial environment. These contaminants reflecting an unclean surface, can rapidly inactivate some germicides, such as hypochlorites, rendering them ineffective for their intended use.
In general however, germicides exert their effect by either attacking a specific part of the bacterial cell, or causing damage to some of its components. Germicides can fall into three classifications, based on the their method ot bacterial attack.

Germicides such as sodium hypochlorite of peroxyacetic acid (PAA), are strong oxidizing agents and can cause total destruction of the cells membrane, resulting in vital bacterial components leaking out into their surrounding environment. This process results in a true microbial death.

Some germicides, such as the quaternary ammonium compounds (quats), have the capacity to attach themselves onto specific sites on the bacterial cell membrane. They do this by virtue of the fact that the quats carry a positive electrical charge in solution and are attracted to the negatively charged portions of the bacterial membrane. The end result is that quats block the uptake of nutrients into the cell and prevent the excretion of waste products which accumulate within their structure.
In effect, the cell is both starved and internally poisoned from the accumulated wastes.

Biocides, such as phenolics, which exert their activity in this manner actually enter the cell and chemically react with certain key enzymes which support either cell growth or metabolic activities which supplies the bacteria with the energy needed for growth and multiplication. If inactivation is incomplete the injured bacteria can regenerate several hours later and recontaminate the surface.


It is presumed that viral infectivity is supressed, due to the denaturing and break down of the viral protein necessary for infection, though a reaction of that protein with two types of active oxygen present in the Water:
1.Electrolyzed Hypochlorous Acid (HOCL)
2.Hydroxyl radicals (OH)
It is widely believed that the bactericidal effect of Electrolyzed Water (HOCL-solution) against various strains of bacteria is due to the combined action of hydrogen ion concentration, oxidation-reduction-potential (ORP-reactions) and dissolved chlorine (HOCL).
First, ORP-reactions at the cell membrane damage the outer and inner membrane and inactivate the microbes defense mechanism. Then HOCL can penetrate the cell and oxidize it.

Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl, which is electrically neutral) and Hypochlorite Ions (OCl, electrically negative) will form Free Available Chlorine  (FAC) when bound together. This results in disinfection. Both substances have very distinctive behavior.

The cell wall of pathogenic microorganisms is negatively charged by nature. As such, the negatively charged Hypochlorite Ion (OCL-) can only penetrate it by the neutral Hypochlorous Acid (HOCL), rather than.

HOCL itself can penetrate slime layers, cell walls and protective layers of microorganisms and effectively kills pathogens as a result. With the aid of ORP-reaction, HOCL can even easier penetrate cell membranes. The microorganisms will either die or suffer from reproductive failures.

According to Dr. Cloete, the advantages of onsite generated HOCL has been confirmed, wherein the biocidal activity of HOCL generated onsite, is 300 times more active than Sodium Hypochlorite at the same concentration of free available chlorine. Additionally, a concentration of 2% HOCL achieved same results than 0,05% Gluterhaldehyde. Similarly, it has been shown that a 5% solution of Sodium Hypochlorite (only to be used as disinfectant) has equal results than 0.03% HOCL (which can be used as disinfectant and as sporicidal agent).

Thus, Electrolyzed Water (HOCL-Solutions) have been conclusively shown to exceed chemically derived equivalents both in low dosage effectiveness as well as physico-chemical purity.

Release of New Air Purification System by Sanyo

Sanyo made an announcement on launch of its new air purification system boosting the odor elimination speed by as much as three times compared to its previous model. The new model is based on Sanyo’s Virus Washer electrolyzed water technology capable of electrolyzing tap water for creating a power disinfectant effect for air purification. Sanyo has already made an announcement on August in effectiveness of its air purification technology in suppressing the H1N1 virus.


In addition to this Virus Washer technology is effective for controlling airborne viruses, bacteria and allergens such as pollen. Beside the Powerful Odor-elimination Mode, the new VW-SF10C air purification system for professional use features a Dual fresh and waste water tank resulting in saving time and energy according to the company. The Powerful Odor-elimination capability is a result of increase concentration of electrolyzed water as well as the development of the new Dual Fresh & Waste water Tank unit, which enables the recycling and re-circulation of previously discarded water from the wastewater tank. This has resulted in greater amount of odor causing substances to be absorbed by the electrolyzed water, thereby improving the odor-elimination effect. The powerful odor elimination capability was a result of combining electrolyzation control with an Automatic Saltwater Dispenser resulting in an increase in concentration of hypochlorous acid responsible for dissolving odor causing substances in the re-circulating water. In the previous model of Virus Washers VW-VF 10B it was necessary to regularly add salt to purification water tank in order to maintain a certain concentration of chloride ions in the electrolyzed water which becomes unnecessary due to introduction of Automatic Saltwater Dispenser resulting in continuous operation of air purification system. The “Off Timer” function enables users to manage the length of time that the air purification system operates when no one is in the room, thereby helping to save energy. The time can be set for 1, 2, 4, 8, or 10-hour operation. The new VW-SF10C weighs 33 Kg with no fresh and salt water added. It comes in dimension of H:790 W:580 D 297 mm. The new VW-SF10C is not exactly come cheap; the new system’s price tag is at 546,000 Yen. The release of VW-SF10C is due on November 1st, 2009 with monthly production of 2000 units.

H1N1 & Electrolyzed Water

With so much being reported, these days, about H1N1 (Swine Flu) and the mounting cases being counted, here and abroad, it is no wonder there has been an increasing rate of concern among people seeking answers for protection and prevention.  To date, attention has been mainly focused on the development of pharmaceutical vaccines for “protection” coupled with a public awareness campaign to employ increased self-help measures (hygiene and changed habits) for “prevention”.  Lost in the fray, however, is our government’s reluctance to acknowledge or use a readily available, all natural solution “Electrolyzed Water” (also known as Anolyte) to mitigate, for instance, the H1N1 flu epidemic.

The Electrolyzed Water technology was originally developed in Russia over 4 decades ago.  For years, thereafter, renowned universities and institutions (the world over) studied, tested and proved that Anolyte (the non-toxic liquid generated by this scientific breakthrough), did, in fact, achieve stunning results when tested against disease causing viruses and other applications.  Ongoing academic clinical research continues to prove and re-confirm that Anolyte is 100% effective against an extensive array of viruses…to include H1N1.

Earlier this year, other companies (now engaging in the emergent field of electrolyzed water here in the USA) have released reports to support their recent H1N1 findings.  Based on the results of their tests, these published reports describe how this technology and, most specifically, the fluids it produces, are capable of protecting humanity against the H1N1 pandemic.  Reports like these are all very well and good, but not, exactly, new knowledge.  This information does, however, further serve to confirm the overwhelming effectiveness of Anolyte and lend a collective voice in support of the ever-growing industry to herald the list of benefits derived from Anolyte’s properties…not to mention its commercial value when pitted against costly vaccines and potential side-effects/risks.

I am very pleased to say that, in 2007, NatureTech Solutions, Inc. was considerably ahead of the curve.  In late fall that year, NTS commissioned a study with Dr. Huaguang Lu at Penn State…Avian Virologist, Senior Research Associate, Head of Avian Virology Section, Animal Diagnostic Laboratory, Dept. of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University.  The purpose of the study was to determine the efficacy of NTS Anolyte against a host of viruses.

In April 2008, I received Dr. Lu’s report, and we were both ecstatic at seeing the test results…briefly detailed below.  The complete study included various strains of the avian flu virus…including H1N1…and other important avian viruses.  These extraordinary findings were provided to several government/state agencies, health departments and news media.  To date, response has come from the State of Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) and USDA labs.  With growing concerns being manifested about various predictions and potential effects that the H1N1 flu could have in the work place, PDA began their own in-house testing to evaluate, first hand, the practical application and effectiveness of Anolyte in an effort to protect the work force in their facility and to offset the anticipated rate of elevated absenteeism.  PDA is extremely pleased with the results to date and further encourages NTS to expand testing in other fields of use and application ranging from dairy to agriculture.  Meanwhile, as I previously reported, USDA continues to conduct their own studies to determine how Anolyte can possibly be used in fish processing to make products safer for the consumer.

Project Title:  Evaluation of the “Anolyte Water” or “Neutral Electrolyzed Water” Disinfectant Solution on Inactivation of Avian Influenza Virus and Other Avian Viruses

Tests were conducted on 6 levels—each to determine the effects of the Anolyte Water solution on inactivation of Avian influenza Virus (AIV)

  • Ten avian influenza viruses were tested against: H1N1, N2N2, H3N2, H4N8, H5N2, H5N3, H5N9, H6N8, H7N2 AND N9N1. Paramyxoviruses (PMV) and Newcastle disease virus (NDV, or PMV-1)
  • Infectious Bronchitis virus (IBV)
  • Fowl Adenovirus (FAV)
  • Four FAV strains of M2, KR5, C229 and LA/SPF/C
  • Avian Reovirus: 10 field isolates of avian reovirus were used
  • Pigeon’s Herpervirous: 10 field isolates of pigeon herpervirous were used.

The results of the Dr. Lu’s study, conducted in behalf of NTS, concluded that all 40 subject viruses were 100% inactivated with a 1:2 & 1:5 dilution ratio within 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, 30 min, 60 min and 120 min reaction time tested.  NTS provided its own brand (“NEWater”) of the Anolyte water fluid for use in this study…at a pH of 6.7, Oxidation Reduction (ORP) of 910 and Free Available Chlorine (FAC) of 400 parts per million.  Another name common to Anolyte is Hypochlorous Acid (the human body produces Hypochlorous Acid naturally as part of its immune system).  Dilution of Anolyte to the 1:2 and 1:5 ratio was accomplished using sterile distilled water or deionized water.

Electrolyzed Water highly effective for New H1N1 Influenza

SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. has already demonstrated through joint research with public institutions, the effectiveness of its electrolyzed water technology, developed over many years, to suppress various viruses including seasonal influenza. Now the company has confirmed through joint research with the Gunma Prefectural Institute of Public Health and Environmental Sciences that this technology is also highly effective for suppressing the new H1N1 (swine flu) virus that has been spreading around the world since the spring. (1)What is the new H1N1 virus?

New H1N1, or swine flu, is the new pandemic influenza virus that began spreading around the world in the spring of 2009. It causes symptoms such as high fever, muscle aches, and runny nose. Younger people are particularly prone to the new virus, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has now declared a phase-six global pandemic alert.

(2)What is a clinical strain of new H1N1?

The clinical strain of the new H1N1 is a viral strain collected from swine flu patients. Through genetic testing of this virus, it has been confirmed as the new H1N1 virus that has been spreading around the world.

2. Details of the demonstrated effects

(1) Effectiveness of electrolyzed water to reduce new H1N1 viral infectivity

The verification testing on the effectiveness of electrolyzed water to reduce the infectivity of the new H1N1 virus confirmed a 99% or greater suppression of infectivity for the new H1N1 influenza virus. The testing was conducted by exposing the virus to electrolyzed water with a free chlorine concentration of 2 mg/L, for ten minutes.

Testing method: A suspension of new H1N1 influenza virus was exposed to electrolyzed water with a free chlorine concentration of 2 mg/L for 10 minutes, and the viral infectivity reduction effect was evaluated. Measurement method: The viral infectivity (TCID50) measurement method*5 was employed using Madin-Darby canine kidney cells (MDCK cells). Joint research institution: Gunma Prefectural Institute of Public Health and Environmental Sciences

(2) Mechanism for suppression of the new H1N1 influenza virus using electrolyzed water (presumed)

From the testing results for the infectivity reduction effect of electrolyzed water, the effectiveness of the virus washer technology was confirmed for the new H1N1 influenza virus, just as it had been confirmed for the seasonal influenza virus. It is presumed that viral infectivity is suppressed, due to the denaturing and break down of the viral protein necessary for infection, through a reaction of that protein with two types of active oxygen (electrolyzed hypochlorous acid and hydroxyl radicals) present in electrolyzed water.

Respiratory viruses including the new H1N1 influenza virus are spread through droplet and airborne transmission. As a result, the rapid elimination of airborne viruses is thought that it is effective. Since the viral suppression effect of air purifiers is not visible to the naked eye, it is important to use technology that has been scientifically proven. The recent results are very significant as the first research to scientifically demonstrate that electrolyzed water inactivates the new influenza virus (H1N1).
